Swallowing Disorders

A Speech and Language Therapist is trained to address feeding problems. These include:

Dysphagia:

  • Difficulty moving food from mouth to stomach

  • Occurs in all age groups

  • May result from structural or physiological abnormalities

 

Tongue Thrust:

  • Unusual sequence of oral movements when swallowing

  • Tongue pushes forwards against front teeth

  • Usually messy eaters

  • Tongue forces teeth out of alignment

  • May have associated articulation disorder
